Best children's hospitals
Miami Childrens Hospital offers the most advanced techniques for the surgical management of pediatric cardiovascular problems. MCHs heart program brings together a select group of world-renowned cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons whose teamwork has contributed to the development of many new treatments and surgical techniques including Minimally Invasive Management of Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease.

Post operative and follow-up care is streamlined by using an integrated computer database management system. All patients are supported as needed by Miami Childrens caring, dedicated pediatric CICU team.

By providing the kind of personal care which puts each child at the center of a team medical effort, the MCH heart program has worked miracles for critically ill children and provided calming relief to distressed families.

Services Include:

  • Complex neonatal congenital heart surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Pediatric tracheal reconstruction
  • Cardiopulmonary support/ventricular assist/ECMO
  • Autologous or directed blood donation offered upon request for surgical procedures requiring blood transfusion

A Beacon of hope for families confronting the reality of a child with a heart defectMinimally Invasive Management of Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease

Video-assisted endoscopic techniques for congenital heart disease offered at Miami Childrens Hospital, were pioneered by Redmond P. Burke, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery. Using endoscopic cameras and specially designed instruments, several cardiac problems can now be corrected through small punctures, avoiding large incisions in the patients chest. This minimally traumatic technique results in less post-operative pain and a more rapid recovery. The following heart defects have been repaired using this new technique:

Patent ductus arteriosus interruption

  1. Vascular ring division
  2. Pericardial window
  3. Diaphragm plication
  4. Thoracic duct ligation
  5. Ligation of collateral vessels
Long-term cosmetic results are dramatically superior to conventional surgical incisions.

Cardiac Non-Invasive Imaging: Echocardiography and Cardiac MRI

Echocardiography is an important diagnostic tool in pediatric cardiology. It utilizes ultrasound technology to provide anatomic and physiologic information regarding the heart. The Pediatric Echocardiography Laboratory at Miami Children’s Hospital was the first pediatric center in the state of Florida to be accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). The laboratory is involved in cutting-edge technology in all aspects of echocardiography from surface transthoracic studies to transesophageal evaluations and fetal echocardiography, and real-time, three-dimensional echocardiography. These studies are performed on a daily basis at Miami Children’s using the most technologically advanced equipment.

In addition to echocardiography, Miami Children’s also offers other state-of-the-art modalities for imaging the heart non-invasively. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) is quickly becoming the diagnostic standard of care for many children with congenital and acquired heart diseases. The hospital houses the most advanced cardiac MRI system currently available. Cardiac non-invasive imaging can also be accomplished using the hospital’s multidetector computed tomography (CT) scanner which can obtain up to 32 images per second, a technology not available in most hospitals today.
The Heart Program recently began using three-dimensional printing technology to support pre-surgical planning, especially for patients with complex heart conditions. 3D printing technology enables a life-size visualization of a complex heart to explore potential options for repair.
