Ophthalmology
The Division of Ophthalmology has two full-time geographic surgeons and eight attending surgeons. Residents in the Pediatric program rotate through the geographic office on a regular basis for orientation in basic ophthalmic examinations and management. Elective rotations are available to provide time more detailed instruction and practice in examination techniques . A full range of ophthalmic problems are seen, including regular refractions, strabismus management with both surgical and nonsurgical means, cataract surgery including intraocular lens implantation, tumors and trauma. Consultations with Neurology, Genetics and Neonatology provide exposure to a wide spectrum of clinical problems. A senior resident from the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute rotates through the Division one day a week. In addition, visiting fellows from abroad are frequently part of the teaching program in the Division. About 6000 outpatient visits and over 300 operations are done as part of the geographic practice of the Division of Ophthalmology. Orthopaedics The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is staffed by four full-time pediatric orthopaedic surgeons managing a broad range of musculoskeletal problems. Direct exposure to the office practice setting with one-on-one discussion of problems commonly seen in the pediatric population is available. Exposure to the orthopaedic management of acute trauma and fractures is provided, as well as emergency room contact.

Otolaryngology
The Division of Otolaryngology has a staff of 24 otolaryngologists, three of whom are located full-time at Miami Childrens Hospital. The division participates in the otolaryngological training of pediatric residents, providing weekly lectures and personal assistance in the rotation through observation at the ENT clinic and community offices. A full spectrum of pediatric ENT problems are handled at the Miami Childrens Clinic which averages 500 patients per year with over 1000 surgical cases per year. At the same time, the Division of Otolaryngology represents Miami Childrens Hospital at national and international meetings with a comprehensive program of lectures and conferences. A program for qualified otolaryngologists from Central and South America has been developed, including observation at the office and the operating room as well as daily discussions of the most interesting cases.

Pathology
Miami Childrens is the only hospital laboratory in South Florida exclusively for pediatric services. It is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities for anatomic and clinical laboratory studies, research and teaching.

Pediatric Surgery
Comprehensive surgical care in the fields of general, thoracic and urologic surgery are provided by this division. Special areas of expertise include neonatal surgery, a regionalized trauma program, a solid tumor service and a urodynamic laboratory for the assessment of bladder dysfunction. Two postgraduate fellows in Pediatric Surgery are an integral part of the educational and patient care delivery system. General surgical residents from Mount Sinai Medical Center and MCH pediatric residents, along with national and international medical students, rotate in the Pediatric Surgical Service and participate in its many monthly meetings and conferences.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Besides routine types of pediatric plastic surgery, including the treatment of trauma, members of the Plastic Surgery Division have particular interests in cleft lip and palate, ear reconstruction, hemangiomas and vascular malformations, orbital and ocular plastic surgery, and craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery. In addition, members of the Division have particular expertise in microsurgery, hand surgery, and repair of brachial plexus lesions. Teaching in this Division involves the Craniofacial fellows and residents from the Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Miami, and the participation of Pediatric Residents from Miami Childrens Hospital.

Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion
In 1991, MCH inaugurated the first Division of Pediatric Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion in the State of Florida. Emphasis is placed on training residents in the areas of prevention and health education from prenatal stages to adolescent years with a strong commitment to school health from pre-K through high school. Our innovative "Health-on-Wheels" program is the hallmark of our community outreach. Three mobile health units equipped with the latest medical and dental technology access the school system to provide clinical, preventive and screening services to the medically underserved students of Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties. Full service school and center based, the third mobile health unit will be servicing the Juvenile Justice System of Miami Dade County.

Psychiatry
The Division of Psychiatrys Inpatient Treatment Program is a 20-bed unit housing children and adolescents ages 6 through 17. This is an intensive program designed to meet the specific needs of patients who would benefit from a structured therapeutic and caring environment. Family involvement is the cornerstone of our treatment program. Average length of stay is 14 to 21 days. We also offer partial hospitalization. The Outpatient Program services children and adolescents ages 1 to 19, and adults when the need for treatment arises out of problems with their child. The most frequently referred cases for diagnoses and management include children and youth with eating, mood, and anxiety disorders, psychoses, and ADHD.

Pulmonology
Outpatient and inpatient services, including consultation, performance of pulmonary function testing and endoscopic procedures, are provided for chronic and acute respiratory problems in infants, children and adolescents. Special emphasis is given to recurrent and persistent respiratory conditions, such as chronic cough and allergic lung diseases. A fully accredited Cystic Fibrosis Center is also part of the Division of Pulmonology.
