Pediatric Residency Program
Hospital Services: Part 1

Miami Children's Hospital offers a full range of services from birth to age 21 with primary care pediatrics as the cornerstone. The services include preventive medicine and the most sophisticated medical and surgical tertiary care.

Allergy
The Allergy Division is devoted to a comprehensive evaluation and management of patients with various allergy-related disorders including asthma, rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, drug allergies, and other environmental allergies. The pediatric resident is encouraged to elect a rotation where he/she will become familiar with the interpretation of pulmonary function tests, immediate skin testing, patch testing and in vitro allergy testing.

Anesthesiology
Pediatric-trained anesthesiologists provide anesthesia for over 8000 procedures a year. These procedures include urosurgical, cardiovascular, pediatric general surgical, ENT, plastic-reconstructive and orthopedics. Pediatric residents rotate through the department to perform supervised intubations to develop and maintain their airway management skills.

Cardiology
The Pediatric Cardiology Program at Miami Childrens Hospital offers a full range of cardiac services for children. All diagnostic services are available, including echocardiographic and electrophysiologic studies. There is a very active open-heart surgery program for infants and children. The residents will be offered an elective in Pediatric Cardiology in which he/she will learn skills necessary for office examination of the cardiac patient. The resident will also be exposed to echocardiographic diagnosis. He/she will have a chance to participate in postoperative care and cardiac catheterization.

Cardiovascular Surgery
The Cardiovascular Surgery Program at Miami Childrens Hospital is focused on the complete repair of complex congenital heart defects in neonates, infants and children. A team approach is emphasized in the preoperative evaluation, diagnosis, intraoperative repair and postoperative intensive care of these patients. An emphasis is placed on minimizing surgical trauma by utilizing video assisted endoscopic surgical techniques for cardiac surgery. A comprehensive database allows rigorous follow-up of patients who often require staged repairs of complex lesions. A multidisciplinary approach utilizing medical services, nurses and hospital staff facilitates each patients care. Current investigations in the cardiac research facility include the development of endoscopic techniques for open heart surgery, ventricular assist devices, tracheal transplantation and hybrid techniques utilizing minimally invasive surgery and interventional catheterization.

Continuing Care Center (CCC)
In the Continuing Care Center (CCC), residents provide supervised comprehensive care to an identifiable group of their own patients for the duration of the training period. In addition to general pediatric skills, child development is emphasized throughout the ambulatory rotation. A special rotation in developmental pediatrics is provided under the supervision of child development specialists at MCH-CCC and at the MCH Dan Marino Center. Each resident spends half a day per week in the Continuing Care Center throughout all 3 years of residency. Block time in the ambulatory setting is provided so that the resident may see a variety of patients in the walk-in general clinic and also in all of the subspecialty areas of pediatric medicine and surgery.

Craniofacial Center
The Craniofacial Center at Miami Childrens Hospital consists of a multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive care and rehabilitation for infants, children and young adults with congenital and acquired craniofacial disorders.

Critical Care Medicine
Three full-time pediatric intensivists, six fellows and four residents provide immediate care for over 1000 medical or surgical patients requiring intensive care in our 16-bed, fully computerized unit. Two daily teaching rounds occur. Basic and clinical research are ongoing with current emphasis on the physiology of respiration and circulation pertaining to Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
