Welcome to Miami Children's Brain Institute - the nation's first comprehensive medical program dedicated solely to pediatric neurosciences

Mission

To advance the frontiers of treatment, education and scientific research bringing new hope to children with neurological disorders; saving young lives, improving quality of life and enhancing productivity for a lifetime.

Vision
Miami Children's Brain Institute will expand its status as the world leader in pediatric neurosciences, collaborating with other institutions in the community and providing a full spectrum of care and subspecialty excellence to children with neurological disorders.

Specialized resources for special care

The brain of a child is unique, not simply a smaller version of the adult brain. During infancy and childhood, more than a hundred billion brain cells develop into highly specialized integrated networks, a critical process that allows the child to walk, learn, and talk.

The process of development puts the child’s brain in a delicate balance. On one hand it is extremely vulnerable to disease and injury; brain disorders are very common and the number of children affected is on the rise nationwide. The developing brain also shows remarkable resilience and capability to rewire, a unique phenomenon called plasticity that provides a window of opportunity for neurological recovery only during the first decade of life.

This delicate balance poses special challenges to the care of the child’s brain. Rising to this challenge in 2001, Miami Children’s Hospital consolidated its considerable neuroscience resources to found the Miami Children’s Brain Institute, the nation’s first comprehensive medical program dedicated exclusively to the care of the developing brain.

The institute serves as a beacon to families confronting the uncertainty of a child with a brain disorder, offering the latest treatments and assessment techniques available at few other centers in the nation. In fact, many of the institute's most notable successes are in children who could not be helped elsewhere. Our program is also nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report.

The institute takes care of over 45,000 children annually referred from world over with disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. It has a cumulative clinical experience unparalleled in the United States, a benefit of world-class care that Florida residents enjoy without having to venture beyond the borders of their home state.
