CARDIAC SURGERY STATISTICS

Post operative and follow-up care is streamlined by using an integrated computer database management system. All patients are supported as needed by Miami Childrens caring, dedicated pediatric CICU team.

By providing the kind of personal care which puts each child at the center of a team medical effort, the MCH Congenital Heart Institute has worked miracles for critically ill children and provided calming relief to distressed families.

Services Include:
  • Complex neonatal congenital heart surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Pediatric tracheal reconstruction
  • Cardiopulmonary support/ventricular assist/ECMO
  • Autologous or directed blood donation offered upon request for surgical procedures requiring blood transfusion

Minimally Invasive Management of Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease

Video-assisted endoscopic techniques for congenital heart disease offered at Miami Childrens Hospital, were pioneered by Redmond P. Burke, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery. Using endoscopic cameras and specially designed instruments, several cardiac problems can now be corrected through small punctures, avoiding large incisions in the patients chest. This minimally traumatic technique results in less post-operative pain and a more rapid recovery.

The following heart defects have been repaired using this new technique:

    1. Patent ductus arteriosus interruption
    2. Vascular ring division
    3. Pericardial window
    4. Diaphragm plication
    5. Thoracic duct ligation
    6. Ligation of collateral vessels
Long-term cosmetic results are dramatically superior to conventional surgical incisions.
