MCH Cardiologist and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Perform World First - Click here to read more!

The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at MCH features the most advanced, fully digital, completely computerized equipment currently available anywhere in the world. By replacing cineangiographic film with high resolution computer enhanced digital imaging, radiation doses are reduced by roughly 70%. At the same time, the improved image quality shortens case times and contributes to the continued successful application of the most advanced interventional catheterization techniques. Images are archived on CD format as well as maintained on-line for multi-user, simultaneous viewing. All physiologic variables are instantly entered into an automated, networked database, which allows us to accurately track our results.

All currently available interventional techniques are performed including endovascular stent implantation, coil closure of patent ductus arteriosus, balloon valvuloplasty for mitral, pulmonary, aortic stenosis and angioplasty for any vascular narrowing. Since the Fall of 1996 Miami Childrens Hospital has been one of seven U.S. centers participating in an FDA-sanctioned trial of a new occlusion device used to close atrial septal defects (ASDs).

  • Atrial septal defect occlusion
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Endovascular stent implantation
  • Vascular occlusion/embolization

    Endovascular Stents

Many children with congenital heart disease are born with or develop vascular narrowing (particularly in the pulmonary arteries). While some of this narrowing is treatable with balloon angioplasty or surgery, the results of these two forms of therapy can be very disappointing. Stent implantation involves the placement of a stainless steel mesh tube across the narrowed area. This tube is then expanded with a balloon catheter and left in place to support the previously narrowed vessel wall. Endovascular stents have provided the pediatric interventional cardiologist with a powerful weapon to combat this difficult problem.
