Offering Bone Marrow Transplant Patients Excellent Care, Close to HomeMiami Children’s Hospital’s Bone Marrow Transplantation Programs Earns OptumHealth’s ‘Center of Excellence’ Status

FACT AccreditedMiami Children’s Hospital’s (MCH) Bone Marrow Transplantation Program was established in 1991. The program attained certification from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT) for all aspects of bone marrow transplantation (allogeneic and autologous transplants, bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell hematopoietic stem cell harvesting, and hematopoietic stem cell processing) in 2003 and has consistently maintained the rigorous qualifications necessary to ensure its continued standing over the years. The MCH program is also an accredited center for transplants under the auspices of the Children’s Oncology Group.  The Miami Children’s Hospital Cancer Center has received approved cancer program status from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer. MCH is one of only 12 children’s hospitals nationwide and the second in Florida to achieve this distinction and was the first to be recognized under new pediatric standards developed by ACS.

Miami Children’s Hospital has been designated a “Center of Excellence” for bone marrow transplantation by OptumHealth. Miami Children’s is the only pediatric hospital in South Florida -- and one of only three pediatric hospitals in Florida -- to achieve this designation.

Miami Children’s is also designated an OptumHealth Center of Excellence for its Congenital Heart Disease Program as well as its Neonatal (NICU) Services.

OptumHealth is a national transplant network that manages bone marrow transplant services for several third-party payers, including United Healthcare. That means families covered by these insurers no longer need to leave South Florida for bone marrow transplantation.

The MCH Bone Marrow Transplantation Program has been a leader in providing bone marrow transplantation treatment for children with lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, myelodisplastic syndrome and sickle cell disease.
