EMERGENCY MEDICINE

The Emergency Medicine Division is staffed 24 hours a day. It serves as a regional pediatric trauma referral center, caring for approximately one third of the major pediatric traumas in Miami-Dade County. The division supports three pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship positions.

ENDOCRINOLOGY

Provides evaluation and treatment for endocrine and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, short stature, thyroid disease and disorders of the adrenals and gonads.

GASTROENTEROLOGY

Offers a full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic services dedicated exclusively to the pediatric patient. Under the direction of pediatric gastroenterologists, children receive the specialized care they need for a wide variety of gastrointestinal, hepatic and nutritional disorders, including chronic constipation, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, gastroesophageal reflux, GI bleeding, biliary atresia, hepatitis, anorexia nervosa, cystic fibrosis, failure to thrive, post liver transplant care, eating disorders and many other problems. Diagnostic and therapeutic services available include upper and lower endoscopy, esophageal dilatation, esophageal pH monitoring, breath hydrogen analysis, esophageal and rectal manometry, biofeedback, liver biopsy, diagnostic small bowel aspirate, nutritional counseling, pancreatic stimulation test, evaluation and management of chronic liver and bowel disease and liaison for liver transplantation.

GENERAL PEDIATRICS

From health promotion to emergency care, the Department of Pediatric Medicine offers a comprehensive array of non-surgical services for infants, children, teenagers and their parents. Our medical team is highly experienced in diagnosing and treating childhood illnesses, chronic conditions, and medical emergencies. We work closely with families and referring physicians to provide the best and most effective care for our patients.

GENETICS

The Genetics Division provides diagnostic and treatment services for genetic and metabolic disorders. Services include availability of extensive laboratory studies in the areas of the mucopolysaccharidoses, lipidoses, amino and organic acid disorders, and DNA-based diagnosis. The Cytogenetics laboratory performs routine cytogenetics, prophase, fragile-X and leukemia studies. The Neurofibromatosis Center, part of the genetics program, holds weekly clinics.

HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY/CANCER

Provides comprehensive consultative services for children with anemias, hemoglobinopathies, hemophilias and coagulation disorders, leukemias and childhood solid tumors. Protocols developed nationally are used in the management of lymphoblastic and myelogenous leukemias, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor and other embryonal tumors, soft tissue sarcomas and brain tumors. The division has an active multidisciplinary Tumor Board program. As a member of the Florida Association of Pediatric Tumor Programs, Inc., a Tumor Registry is maintained which records malignancies for statistical and scientific analyses. The Division of Hematology/Oncology is affiliated with the Pediatric Oncology Group.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children with complicated, chronic or recurrent infections. Serves a large population of patients who are immunocompromised and suffer from multiple episodes of infection; children with tuberculosis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis and recurrent sinopulmonary infections. Has an interest in acute and chronic viral infections and, in collaboration with the Department of Laboratory Medicine have been developing a state-of-the-art Virology Diagnostic Center where enzyme immunoassays, immunofluorescence and cell culture systems are employed for rapid diagnosis of common illnesses such as Epstein Barr, CMV, Herpesvirus and many other viruses. Appointments are given only after direct referral from the attending physician.

NEONATOLOGY

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit serves as a referral center for South Florida and the Caribbean. This stateoftheart facility has 22 intensive and intermediate care beds. All patients are under the direct supervision of the attending Neonatologists. The NICU specializes in the care of extremely low birth weight infants (<1,000 gram birth weight), infants with complex cardiac and surgical problems, as well as babies with seizures, metabolic disorders, sepsis and persistent pulmonary hypertension. Highfrequency oscillatory ventilation is provided for neonates with lung injuries.

A Neonatal Transport Team is on standby 24 hours a day for neonatal emergencies. Onsite videotelemetry is available for investigation of neonatal seizures.
