Miami Children’s Hospital has recently been awarded limited funds to support the care of two patients, up to 17 years of age, who have met the critical criteria for a bone marrow transplant, but do not have access to full funding needed to complete the treatment. Patients must be clinically ready to be admitted and begin the bone marrow transplant no later than February 22, 2010.

Bone marrows transplants are utilized to treat various malignancies, including leukemia, as well as certain non-malignant diseases, such as immunodeficiencies and blood disorders, including thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

Dr. Evan Zahn, director of cardiology at Miami Children's Hospital's Congenital Heart Institute, is the lead author of a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). The JACC article describes six-month outcomes for patients using the Melody(R) Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve from Medtronic, Inc. The valve is implanted through a catheter procedure instead of open-heart surgery in patients with congenital heart disease affecting the function of their pulmonary valve. “These important study results show that the Melody transcatheter valve is an effective alternative to repeat open heart surgery and all of the attendant risks associated with it,” said Evan Zahn, MD. “This procedure represents an exciting breakthrough for a patient population that typically requires numerous open heart surgical procedures over the course of their lifetime and in certain instances may be life saving.”
