The number of children and adolescents with eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia, has risen steadily from the 1950s onwards and 5 million Americans are estimated to be affected each year. These are serious life-threatening conditions that have been observed in both sexes, and across socioeconomic and racial/ethnic groups. About 1 in 200 females (0.5%) have anorexia nervosa and between 1-5% have bulimia nervosa. Up to 5-10% of all cases occur in males.
Here at Miami Children's Hospital we offer both outpatient and inpatient services for patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia and other eating disorders. Our outpatient services are delivered by a team that includes adolescent medicine sub-specialists, a nutritionist and a psychologist. Inpatient services include medical, nursing, nutrition, mental health and social services.
