August 2007: Prevent Backover Accidents: Remember to Spot the Tot
In one brief, horrific moment, life is tragically, unalterably changed for another South Florida family. A parent, grandparent or other relative backs out of the driveway, only to discover that the family’s precious toddler has been run over by the car. 

Miami Children’s Hospital’s Trauma Center has received a record number of backover accident victims in 2007. “Typically we would treat one or two of these cases per year. Since January, we have received nine backover victims, two with such severe injuries that they died,” said Dr. Malvin Weinberger, Director of Trauma Services. Read more…

May 2007: ‘Keeping Eyes On Prize (Kids!)’ Is Key To Drowning Prevention
No scream. No splash or churning of water. Just silence. That’s the sound of a child drowning.

“Most people think they’ll hear sounds of distress when a child is in trouble in the water. But they won’t. A drowning is a silent event,” said Dr. Jefry Biehler, Associate Director of Trauma Services at Miami Children’s Hospital. “In many cases the parents are sitting nearby, reading or talking.
