Required didactic courses include Basic Pediatric Dentistry Core, Orthodontic Core, Child Development and Behavior Management, Principles of Sedation and Anesthesia, Craniofacial Growth and Development, Cardiology and Preventive Dentistry, Hospital Dentistry, Oral Pathology, Special Parent Care, Practice Management and Ethics, Dental Pharmacology, and Advanced Pediatric Dentistry Core.
Basic Pediatric Dentistry Core:
This course will provide basic knowledge of pediatric dentistry at an intense, introductory level.
Orthodontic Core:
Course will provide principles of established orthodontic treatment including diagnosis and treatment planning of simple and moderate orthodontic cases.
Child Development and Behavior:
Course will provide knowledge of physical, psychological and social development of children and the different behavioral management techniques used to appropriately treat pediatric patients in different stages of development in the dental settings.
Principles of Sedation:
An introductory didactic course covering the protocols and practice of conscious sedation in pediatric dental practice.
Craniofacial Growth and Development:
Course will provide an understanding of the craniofacial complex and its relevance related to diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic cases and facial anomalies.
Cardiology and Preventive Dentistry:
Course will provide insight into the carious process as well as detailed analysis and evaluation of major issues in preventive dentistry.
Hospital Dentistry:
The course will provide basic knowledge on the indications, applications, and protocols of treatment of patients in the hospital setting.
Oral Pathology:
Course will provide a spectrum of diseases of the hard tissues, oral mucous membrane and paraoral structures. Evaluation and diagnosing of lesions, discussion of possible treatments and rendering proper care will also be covered.
Special Patient Care:
This course will provide knowledge on how to manage the special patient population (medically compromised, emotionally, physically, and developmentally disabled) in the medical and dental setting.
Practice Management and Ethics:
Course will provide necessary information relating to the location, establishment and maintenance of a pediatric dental practice.
Dental Pharmacology:
Course will provide the residents with knowledge to rationally evaluate each major drug class, its implication in dentistry including therapeutic use, side effects and drug effect.
Advanced Pediatric Dentistry Core:
This course will provide an intense, advanced, case-based review of the principles and practices of pediatric dentistry following the guidelines of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination guidelines.
Completion of a research project is required for certification.
Required clinical course include advanced Pediatric Denstistry clinic and Interceptive Orthodontic. Residents complete a one month rotation anesthesia, two-week rotation in Pediatric Medicine and Emergency Room and a one-week rotation in Inpatient Care. The residents participate in patient care in the Operating Room. In addition, the residents participate in craniofacial team clinic and meetings.
