Second Opinions and Electronic Consults
Second opinions are requested for many different reasons. You may simply want to verify that you have made good choices so far. Where was the child's disease initially diagnosed? These cancers are not commonly seen, and physicians at a major pediatric center (Children's Cancer Centers) will have more experience making diagnoses and planning treatments. It is always a patient's right to ask for another medical opinion.
Start collecting the child's medical records and films now because specific items will be needed for a requested consult. Professional opinions may differ or several treatment options may be presented. A third opinion may be sought. Sometimes, there really may be several ways to treat a particular disease, and the opportunity of choice may be valid. Occasionally, there is denial on a parent's part who keeps hoping for another diagnosis entirely.
