Neurosurgery

The Division of Neurosurgery at Miami Children's Hospital is the largest pediatric neurosurgical service in the State of Florida and one of the most recognized programs in the United States.  The accomplishments of the Division of Neurosurgery are the result of the renowned doctors and treatment teams who guide its activities.  Doctors Glenn Morrison, John Ragheb, Sanjiv Bhatia and David Sandberg are all certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and are either board-certified or board-eligible according to the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery.   All of these pediatric neurosurgeons are recognized for excellence among their peers based upon their surgical expertise, their many publications in textbooks and peer-reviewed journals, and their lectures both nationally and internationally.

The Division of Neurosurgery offers state of the art surgical management of disorders of the nervous system including:

  • Surgical treatment of Spasticity (selective dorsal rhizotomy/baclofen pumps)
  • Brain Tumors
  • Spinal Cord Tumors
  • Hydrocephalus (including minimally invasive endoscopic techniques)
  • Head and Spine Trauma
  • Myelomeningocele and other congenital spinal anomalies
  • Chiari Malformations
  • Craniosynostosis and Craniofacial Syndromes
  • Arachnoid Cysts
  • Vascular Malformations of the brain (Aneurysms and Arteriovenous Malformations) and spinal cord
  • Moyamoya Disease
  • Peripheral nerve surgery (e.g. brachial plexus repair)
  • Inflammatory/Infectious processes of the brain and spine (e.g. brain abscess)

Miami Children’s Hospital has, perhaps, the largest national experience in surgically treating young children with intractable epilepsy.  Treatments include hemispherectomy and focal cortical resection, which is often aided by extra-operative monitoring with subdural electrodes to accurately define the epileptogenic area as well as allow for functional cortical mapping.  The Division of Neurosurgery at Miami Children’s Hospital is also one of the busiest referral centers in the country for pediatric brain tumors based upon the expertise of our neurosurgeons using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, frameless stereotactic guidance, and intraoperative mapping to preserve normal brain function.  Miami Children’s Hospital also boasts widely recognized surgical programs for craniosynostosis/craniofacial syndromes and spasticity.  The most complex cases of hydrocephalus are sent to Miami Children’s Hospital for treatment based upon our neurosurgeons’ expertise in minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy and endoscopic cyst fenestration.

In addition to their clinical expertise, the Miami Children’s Hospital Division of Neurosurgery is pushing forward the frontiers of pediatric neurosurgery through its active research programs to improve care for children with neurological disorders.  Active clinical and translational research projects are ongoing to develop novel treatment approaches for pediatric brain tumors and head trauma and new surgical approaches for the treatment of epilepsy.

The expertise and success of our neurosurgery team, which is comprised of Doctors Glenn Morrison, John Ragheb, Sanjiv Bhatia and David Sandberg, and the MCH Brain Institute program both ensure that Miami Children's Hospital will remain at the forefront of pediatric neurological surgery -- not only in South Florida, but also around the world.
