Dr. Stylianos is a graduate of Rutgers University and the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgical training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and subsequently spent two years as the Trauma Fellow at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute in Boston. Dr. Stylianos completed the Pediatric Surgical fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital in 1992. He is Board-Certified in Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

Dr. Stylianos joined the medical staff at Miami Children’s Hospital in 2005 and was elected Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery. Previously, Dr Stylianos was at the Children's Hospital of New York/Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons where he was Director of the Operating Room and Director of the Regional Pediatric Trauma Program. Dr Stylianos was named the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Associate Professor of Surgery, a commitment to medical education which allowed him to train new doctors on issues related to the humanistic practice of medicine.

Dr. Stylianos served as Chairman of the Trauma Committee for the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) from 1997 - 2002 and authored the APSA position paper supporting all measures to reduce the toll of firearm violence in children. Dr Stylianos serves as the Co-Principal Investigator of the APSA Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal and Child Health Bureau Partnership for Information and Communication Grant (#HO3MC0006), "Partnership for Development and Dissemination of Outcomes Measures for Injured Children."

Dr. Stylianos was named one of the “Best Doctors in New York” by New York Magazine for the past six years (2000-2005). He organized and directed the 50-member team of physicians and nurses who separated conjoined twins at Children's Hospital of New York in 1993, 1995, and 2000.
