Hernia

Also known as: inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, hiatal hernia, incisional hernia, umbilical hernia.

What is hernia?

A hernia is the extension of a portion of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening in the wall that normally contains it. They can occur in different areas around the body but are most common in the abdomen.

What causes hernia?

A variety of factors can cause hernias. Small birth defects, muscle strain, or muscle weakness all can cause hernias. Other causes include pregnancy, straining with defecation and while lifting weights, fluid on the abdomen, weight gain, chronic cough, or an injury.

What are the symptoms of hernia?

Hernia may present with a visible lump or bulge in the area. People with hernias may also experience pain, weakness, a burning sensation, pressure, heaviness at the site of the hernia, nausea and vomiting, or discoloration at hernia site.

What are hernia care options?

Surgery is often an option to repair a hernia that is causing problems. At times the hernia bulge can be reduced without surgery.
