The medical students will develop a close relationship with the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology and the Respiratory Therapy Department. Students will be exposed to the importance and value of pulmonary function testing in the diagnosis and follow-up of acute and chronic pulmonary problems, interpretation of blood gases, and the assessment and management of patients seen in the division. Special emphasis will be placed on the understand by the student of the interpretation of blood gases in the presence of different medical problems and the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases. Emphasis in clinical aspects of asthma, BPD, Cystic Fibrosis will be implemented.
Upon completion of the Pulmonary rotation, the student will:
1. Take the history and perform a physical examination on pulmonary patients.
2. Recognize the difference in lung sounds in the common lung problems.
3. Recognize, evaluate and establish differential diagnosis and management in the common lung diseases (Asthma, Bronchiolitis, Pneumonia, Laryngotracheobronchitis, Cystic Fibrosis, etc.
4. Utilize pulmonary function testing in the pediatric patient.
5. Interpret blood gases and clinical application for patients on respirator.
6. Understand control of breathing and SIDS
7. Evaluate chest x-rays.
8. Evaluate patients with upper airway obstruction.
1. Round each day in respiratory therapy rounds where all patients on respirators will be discussed.
2. Interpret arterial blood gases and pulmonary function tests.
3. Present case histories in conference settings.
4. See all patients from the division and see all consultations.
5. Give one conference a week on subjects of his/her interest related to pulmonary physiology or clinical interest.
6. Participate in the pediatric conferences.
