Students will participate in the evaluation and management of children with renal diseases. They will do so by performing history and physical examination, evaluating the laboratory data obtained, and formulating a therapeutic plan once all the data is analyzed.
A second portion of this elective will consist of the active participation at conferences in which the pathology of the patients will be discussed.
Upon completion of this elective, the student should be able to:
1. Obtain a pertinent history and physical examination on patients with renal diseases and fluid and electrolyte disturbances.
2. Readily recognize the features of: Congenital anomalies of the G.U. system, glomerular diseases, tubulo-intestinal diseases, acute and chronic renal failure, injuries to the kidney and urinary tract, fluid and electrolyte disturbances and collagen diseases.
3. Arrive at a differential diagnosis after evaluating the history, physical examination, and laboratory data.
4. Present indications for renal biopsy, dialysis, and referral to a pediatric nephrologist.
5. Formulate well oriented approach to the treatment of the disease process encountered.
1. Attendance at morning rounds with the house staff and attending nephrologist.
2. Observation during procedures, i.e., renal biopsy and dialysis.
3. Evaluation of new patients (inpatients and out patients).
4. Participation in the follow-up of patients with chronic renal conditions.
5. Active participation in "mini-conferences" given by each student in the service. These conferences will be conducted twice weekly and will last approximately 30 minutes for presentation and 30 minutes for discussion. Preferably, these conferences will cover topics related to patients seen on the inpatient and outpatient services.
6. Participation in the weekly X-Ray Conference, Pediatric Grand Rounds, and Urology Conference.
7. Monthly Nephrology Conference.
8. Participation in any other conference that will be relevant to patients with renal diseases, fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
1. Personal evaluation of the attending nephrologist.
2. Students will receive a quiz based on pathology encountered and discussed in conferences.
