Fourth Year Medical Students

Endocrinology

Description:

The student, under direct physician supervision, will participate in clinics, inpatient, and private patient care in the area of endocrinology.

 

Educational Objectives and Methodology:

The medical student will assist in the examination, assessment, and treatment planning of patients presenting with endocrine or diabetic disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

 

The medical student will make rounds on the inpatient service, participate in consultation, attend the clinics and the supplemental conferences given at the time of the clinics, attend scheduled didactic lectures, and participate in patient care with the preceptor.

 

At the end of this rotation, the student will be able to recognize:

 

1. Disorders of growth in children as related to the endocrine system.

    a) Genetic short stature

    b) Endocrine deficiency short stature

    c) Pattern of growth

 

2. Thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in children.

 

3. The mechanisms of puberty and its variations: Delayed adolescence and sexual precocity

 

4. Abnormal sexual differentiation, recognition of the problem, and initial approach.

 

5. Disorders of the adrenal gland, especially congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

 

6. Calcium metabolism and the metabolism of Vitamin D.

 

7. Diabetes Mellitus

    a) Recognition and management of diabetic ketoacidosis

    b) Pathogenesis of diabetes

    c) Care of the diabetic patient

    d) Complications of diabetes

    e) Psychological implications of diabetes

 

8. Hypoglycemia: Neonatal and childhood

 

Evaluation:

Direct observation of the student and case presentations.
