Fourth Year Medical Students

Cardiology

Description:

Medical students will examine patients admitted to the hospital, make daily rounds on all patients on the cardiologist's service, assist and observe the management of cardiac patients in an outpatient setting.

 

Educational Objectives:

At the end of this elective, the students will be able to: 

 

1. Take a history and perform a physical examination on a cardiac patient.

 

2. Recognize the clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and management of the most frequent acyanotic congenital heart diseases (ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosis, coarctation of the aorta, pulmonic and aortic stenosis).

 

3. Recognize, establish the differential diagnosis and management of the most frequent cyanotic heart diseases (Tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, double outlet right ventricle, etc.)

 

4. Recognize the clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and management of major cardiac diseases or recognize the clinical manifestations, differential diagnosis and management of pericardial diseases.

 

5. Distinguish the most frequent cardiac arrhythmia in the pediatric age group.

 

6. Recognize the clinical, differential diagnosis and management of infective endocarditis and rheumatic carditis.

 

 

Methodology:

The student will:

 

1. Make rounds every morning with the attending cardiologist.

 

2. Observe in the cardiac catheterization and angiocardiography laboratory.

 

3. Participate in non-invasive laboratory techniques.

 

4. Participate in the reading on non-invasive techniques as well as the interpretation of data collected in catheterization patients.

 

5. Observe patients followed in the ward when they go into cardiac surgery.

 

6. Participate in the Cardiac Conference held monthly as well as the Pediatric Conferences and Journal Club.

 

Evaluation:

At the end of this elective, the student will be given a quiz based on the material presented during the rotation.
