Chronic Insufficient Sleep

Also known as: insufficient sleep syndrome, chronic sleep deprivation.

What is chronic insufficient sleep?

The repeated, continuous failure to get enough sleep each night (less than six hours) is known as chronic insufficient sleep. It’s fairly common among adults but rare among children.

What causes chronic insufficient sleep?

This condition may be due to related health concerns such as insomnia or sleep apnea, or it may be due to conscious decision made by the individual. For example, an individual may take late shifts at work, or stay up playing video games or watching television.

What are the symptoms of chronic insufficient sleep?

Difficulty concentrating, fatigue, irritability and reduced alertness are short-term symptoms of chronic insufficient sleep. Over time, it can contribute to skin problems, forgetfulness and even heart problems or diabetes.

What are chronic insufficient sleep care options?

If an underlying medical condition is to blame for your chronic insufficient sleep, treating that condition should help with the sleep problems. In other situations, practicing healthy sleep habits and good sleep hygiene can help.
