ADOLESCENT
MEDICINE
The Division
of Adolescent Medicine is committed to providing high quality, comprehensive,
confidential care to adolescents. The scope of services provided
includes a full range of medical, gynecologic and behavioral interventions.
We also offer tobacco cessation interventions.
In the second
decade of life we achieve physical and sexual maturity (puberty).
The associated psycho-social changes (adolescence) are accompanied
by a growth in intellectual capacity. Most of the behaviors seen
at this time, while distressing to parents, are really just part
of normal development. They help the adolescent achieve independence
and develop a stable self-identity. However, many problems of adulthood
begin in adolescence and behavioral decisions made during these
years may profoundly and permanently affect adult health and well-being.
