Founded in 1991
and formally organized as a medical division in 1994, Preventive
Medicine at Miami Children's Hospital is on track to become the
first pediatric preventive medicine institute in the United States.
The division is the most visible instrument of Miami Children's
commitment to reach out to the community to ensure early identification
of life-threatening diseases. By proactively reaching out into the
schools and neighborhoods, preventive medicine has a significant
impact on mortality rates, as well as the cost of healthcare. It
is estimated that the shift from inpatient to outpatient care will
reduce national healthcare costs by billions in the next three years.
In Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties alone, the projected
savings amount to more than $775 million per year.
