Comprehensive
evaluation of renal functions, including kidney biopsies, are provided
by the Division of Nephrology. The division's physicians
serve pediatric patients with:
- Congenital
anomalies of the urinary tract including vesicoureteral reflux
and obstructive uropathy
- Electrolyte
imbalance
- Renal parenchyma
diseases including glomerulonephritis
- Tubular
diseases
- Collagen
vascular diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus.
Dialysis for
patients suffering from acute renal failure is also performed through
the division. The dialysis program includes hemodialysis, acute
and chronic peritoneal dialysis and continuous arteriovenous
hemofiltration.
The division's
Enuresis Center provides treatment of enuresis-associated urinary
disorders by medical or surgical methods. From five to seven million
children in the United States suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis
primarily between the ages of 6 and 16.
The Center for
Enuresis & Urinary Disorders at Miami Children's Hospital offers
a comprehensive approach for diagnosis and treatment of a wide range
of dysfunctional urinary disorders in children. The staff consists
of a physician who supervises all functions of the center, and a
specialized nursing staff trained to meet the special needs of children.
Through education
and direct contact with patients and families, the MCH team can
show that enuresis, a genetic disorder, is simply a dysfunction
of the human body and a treatable condition.
The center specializes
in Urodynamics, the measurement of functional processes in the lower
urinary tract, mainly the bladder. With the help of these tests
it is possible to diagnose various types of "incontinence"
and to follow with appropriate therapy. All urodynamic examinations
are regulated by the International Continence Society and each urodynamic
testing is conducted by a certified and experienced technician under
medical supervision.
