The Division of Hematology / Oncology at Miami Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care for children with acute and chronic blood disorders, pediatric cancer and leukemia.
By supplementing high levels of technological treatment with extensive patient/physician contact, the division has grown significantly in the last five years. Record numbers of new patients, consultations, outpatient visits and procedures performed have led to national recognition and full member status in the Children Oncology Group, a national cooperative oncology research group. As an active participant in this organization, the division has recently been awarded a grant by the National Cancer Institute to stimulate the development and advancement of cancer research. The division’s multidisciplinary Cancer Committee assumes a comprehensive approach to cancer control, while improving the quality of patients’ lives.
Although membership in the Children Oncology Group enables the Division to participate in a number of clinical research protocols and to have access to the very latest research data, it is clinical care that sets the division apart.
The formation of several subspecialty clinics, including Sickle Cell Clinic, Neuro-oncology Clinic and Late-Effects Clinic has dramatically improved patient care. Each clinic accomplishes this exceptional level of care by focusing the personal attention of a physician specialist on the individual needs of each patient.
The Division’s Oncology Inpatient Service now includes 30 beds. The rooms in this unit have been specially prepared to decrease the risk of contaminating immuno-suppressed pediatric cancer patients.
