Academic Hospitalist Fellowship

Welcome to the Academic Hospitalist Fellowship at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH). This one year fellowship is designed to train candidates for a future career in academic pediatrics, teaching, and administration.

The MCH Academic Hospitalist fellowship's long-term objectives aim at preparing diverse, qualified pediatric trained physicians for a pediatric academic hospitalist career. The program is designed to develop the future leaders in pediatric hospital medicine in the areas of clinical care, teaching, research, advocacy and administration. The training setting, opportunities, and focus areas are directed toward the culturally sensitive care of the acutely ill hospitalized children. The long-term goals of the proposed project is to provide high quality training in patient-oriented pediatric inpatient research to qualified health care professionals with interest and expertise in Hospital Medicine research. All fellows participating in the MCH Academic Hospitalist fellowship will spend one year of training dedicated to mentored research (40% of time), clinical duties/patient care, Pediatric Residents' teaching and supervision, administrative and medical students' teaching opportunities.

Fellowship Focus Areas:


In order to tailor the training to the fellow’s area(s) of interest, each prospective applicant will be required to choose a focus area form the following list of topics/focus areas:

 

  1. Quality Improvement/ Outcomes/ Care standardization
  2. Clinical Informatics
  3. Education/Curriculum Development
  4. Care Coordination/ Case Management
  5. Patient Safety/ Medical Errors/ hand-off
  6. Sedation/ Pain management
  7. Telehealth 

The chosen focus area will dictate:

 

1)      The choice of Mentored Project topic

2)      The Committee assignments

3)      The choice to mentors and SOC members

 

Required Didactics:

 

Fellows will have mandatory didactics spread over the course of the year. These include:

 

-         The Common Fellowship Curriculum lecture series: A series of educational topics common to all fellows such as: Adult learning theory, teaching how to teach, evaluation and feedback, dealing with the problem learner, Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM), preparing creative lectures, abstracts, presentations, workshops and posters, professionalism, research methods, biostatistics, to name a few. These occur monthly and are required for all MCH fellows.

-          Hospitalist Division Journal Club (Attend and participate in presenting Journal Club once a quarter)

-         Web-based modules on practice management (IPM) Introduction to the Practice of Medicine Modules

 

 

 

General Program Description:

 

The MCH hospitalist fellowship program is designed to prepare the trainees for an academic career in hospital Pediatrics. Fellows will spend up to ~ 40% of their training time in non-clinical activities e.g. research and teaching and ~ 60% in clinical work. Both research and clinical times will include learning as well as teaching and supervising junior trainees (residents and medical students). Each of the fellows is assigned a “Career Mentor” and a “Research Mentor”. The “Career Mentor” is typically the fellowship director who meets with the fellow(s) on a weekly basis and follows their career development including their leadership and teaching skills. Research Mentors include faculty who have expertise in the fellow’s focus area. They may include generalists as well as specialists. Fellows will be assigned their research mentor based on their “focus area” and research project. Both the career and faculty mentors report back to the Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) on the academic or clinical progress of the trainee including their scholarship project.

 

The fellows will function as junior faculty, participate in weekly journal clubs as well as residents morning reports and didactic lectures. They are expected to participate in Research Conferences at participating institutions both as presenters and attendees. Fellows have the opportunity to teach residents and medical students in the context of clinical work (inpatient) as well as didactic lectures. They are also required to deliver one Grand Round in latter part of the fellowship.

Salary and Benefits:

Fellows’ salary and benefits will be commensurate with the MCH Medical Education salary and benefits provided to fellows. Benefits will include health insurance, dental, and malpractice insurance.

 

Eligible Candidates:

 

The MCH Hospitalist Fellowship is a one year postdoctoral program. Eligible candidates include postdoctoral trainees (with M.D. or D.O. degrees) who have completed a minimum of 3 year Pediatric or 4 year Med-Peds residency training at an ACGME-accredited residency program. Program candidates must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents. The program will recruit one trainee per year to start on July 1st of every academic year.
