Miami Children’s Hospital Devonshire Apartments offer a comfortable, supportive temporary home for patient families coming from distant places. Sick and healing children require their families’ continual emotional support during the weeks or even months of recovery. The Devonshire Apartments provide a home away from home where family members can sleep, eat, relax and share experiences with other families in similar situations.
The Devonshire Apartments are always busy and heavily utilized.
Most families who stay at Devonshire are Floridians who live outside of Miami-Dade County. Twenty percent come from outside Florida; many are from Latin America and the Caribbean Islands.
The average length of stay is three to five days. Some families, however, may spend up to three months because of their child’s condition. Parents of premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, for example, may need to stay for several months while their baby becomes strong enough to survive in a home environment
As the only licensed specialty hospital for children in South Florida, Miami Children’s Hospital provides state-of-the-art pediatric care in a supportive family-centered environment, offering the most comprehensive care for infants, children and young adults in the state of Florida.
The Devonshire Apartments consist of two buildings with a total of 20 furnished units, located two blocks from the hospital in a safe residential community. Units are furnished and include fully equipped kitchens, linens, laundry facilities, private telephone lines/computer jacks, cable television, and maid service. Transportation service to and from the hospital is also provided.
Rooms To Go recently donated nearly $100,000 worth of furniture and accessories to Miami Children’s Hospital’s Devonshire Apartments, as part of the proceeds from the October 2006 opening of their Dadeland store. Rooms to Go staff personally visited the Devonshire Apartments to select the best type of room furnishings and design for the families staying at the Apartments, replacing well-used but definitely aging furniture with brand new, updated and coordinated furniture. Miami Children’s Hospital and Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation sincerely appreciate the generous support of Rooms To Go.
