Nicklaus Children's Hospital Cancer Center

The Nicklaus Children's Hospital Cancer Center performed the region’s first hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) or “heated chemotherapy” surgical treatment on a pediatric cancer patient in 2012.
In addition, Nicklaus Children's Hospital's Cancer Center has participated in a Phase II study of the IMC-A 12 AIGF-I receptor. This antibody is made in a lab and targets a receptor common in pediatric tumors, binding to the receptor and blocking synthesis of a protein needed for tumor growth. Without the protein the tumor cells begin to die.

The Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital is the first in the region to offer a minimally invasive laser procedure called Visualase for children with seizures.

Additionally, in 2012, Nicklaus Children's Hospital announced its first nerve repair surgery with Avance® Nerve Graft by AxoGen, Inc. The processed nerve allograft technology was implanted during a surgery to repair a brachial plexus injury suffered by a 6 month-old baby girl.

The Heart Program
The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Nicklaus Children's Hospital performed the world’s first non-surgical tricuspid valve replacement via catheter on a 9-year-old boy in 2008.
Additionally, in 2012, Nicklaus Children's Hospital became the first pediatric hospital to construct a heart valve from CorMatrix ECM material, which may eliminate the need for repeat future valve replacement surgery in pediatric patients.
