Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital, is blessed with many outstanding volunteers. Here you can meet a few of our dedicated Gift Shop volunteers.
Arantzazu Leyva (known as Annie) attends Sunset Senior High School. Annie began volunteering in the Gift Shop in
February and has accrued 170 hours of service, Annie wanted to fulfill her high school graduation requirement of
volunteering in a hospital atmosphere. Working in the Gift Shop, and being in the midst of staff, visitors, and her peers, has helped Annie overcome her extreme shyness. This young teen is very pleasant to work with, is very calm and poised, and always has a smile for everyone.
Born in Spain, Annie arrived in Miami when she was 5 years old. She enjoys school and photography, and is looking towards a career in psychiatry. Her leisure time is spent reading, and traveling with her parents and younger brother.
Annie loves volunteering in the hospital and the nice atmosphere we provide here. She intends to keep on volunteering upon high school graduation, and we feel fortunate to have her want to remain at NCH.
For the past seven years, volunteer Sandy Levine has been helping in the Gift Shop. Sandy, originally from Pennsylvania, moved to Florida when she was 13. She attended college, and for many years worked as a human resources manager and interior designer.
After raising her daughter and being involved in her daughter's school, Sandy thought the time was right to volunteer. She wanted to work in a hospital, and chose the Gift Shop as the area in which she had the most interest. Working in the Gift Shop was a new experience for Sandy, who had never worked in retail before. Sandy enjoys working with both visitors and staff, and utilizes her great organizational skills helping the Gift Shop Manager with displays and incoming stock.
In her leisure time, Sandy likes spending time with her family, reading and traveling. Sandy and her daughter are getting ready to visit various colleges on the Eastern seaboard, and visiting family in Pennsylvania. We are very happy to have Sandy Levine as part of our NCH team.
Kay Deal has been a Gift Shop volunteer since 1995. Born in North Carolina and schooled in Washington, D.C., Kay moved to Miami where she worked for various local businesses, including Lithgow Funeral Homes. Upon her retirement from Lithgow, Kay decided that she wanted to volunteer at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital. One of Kay's two sons had been treated at the hospital when he was six years old. Kay was very impressed with the wonderful way her son was taken care of, and vowed that at her first opportunity she would volunteer here.
In 1995, Kay began volunteering in the Gift Shop, on a weekly basis. Through another Gift Shop volunteer, she became affiliated with the NCH Auxiliary, and is now its President. Being associated with the hospital is Kay's way of giving back to the community and the hospital that was so good to her son. She finds volunteering very rewarding and worthwhile, and has met many wonderful people along the way.
In her leisure time, Kay is very involved with her family - two sons and two granddaughters, and likes to travel. She also meets with friends on a weekly basis for dinner and a movie. We are happy to have Kay as a volunteer and appreciate her devotion and dedication to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, formerly Miami Children's Hospital.
